Bicycle racing was introduced after the bicycle was invented in the 19th century. Since then, the size and shape of the bicycle have changed and have been improved on tremendously for more efficiency, lightweightness and speed. Present day bicycles and tyres have become so sleek and efficient that 70% to 90% of the bicycle racer's effort is actually spent on overcoming wind resistance instead of pedalling.
