Rugby originated from one of the schools in Warwickshire, England in 1823, where it was introduced by a pupil named Willian Webb Ellis. Cambridge University students began to play the game in 1839 and soon after, Oxford University students also took up the sport.
Thereafter, Rugby became increasingly popular and spread over to countries under the British Empire.
