 SINGAPORE'S TOP MEN'S SQUASH DOUBLES
PAIR LOST
KUALA LUMPUR,
17 Sept 98 (Bernama):
Dubbed as
"Dad's Army", the veteran Singaporeans
have represented their country for more than two
decades.
Today, Zainal and Hill played Gareth Davies and
Matthew Benjamin of Wales, in the squash
championship of the 16th Commonwealth Games at
Bukit Jalil here.
Abidin and Hill are the joint ninth seeds.
However, reputations did not matter on court as
the Welsh pair won in straight games 15-7, 15-11.
Another Singapore player, who has been in the
squash circuit just as long, is Mah Li Lian, a
four-time winner of the Asian senior ladies'
title.
She is partnering Millie Moy in the women's
doubles event.
They played Sue Wright and Cassie Jackman of
England, the runners-up in the inaugural world
doubles in Hong Kong last December.
The Singapore pair were outplayed 5-15 in the
first game, but performed much better in the
second game before losing 12-15.
It was again a case of the young beating the old.
